What is Chow-Chow?
Quite simply chow-chow is a relish that is popular in the South of the United States. The process in making chow-chow can be quite similar to making artichoke relish. (Whats Artichoke Relish? There are many different types of chow-chow from varying regions but in the Carolinas the relish consists of chopped cabbage, onions, and peppers which is pickled in a brine of vinegar, mustard seed, turmeric, sugar, salt and other spices. Often green tomatoes are added as well. Even throughout the Carolinas recipes will vary.
Chow-chow goes great on a hamburger, sausage dog or good ole fashioned hot dog. It can also be used with fried fish, barbecue, fried green tomatoes and cornbread. One popular use for chow-chow is mixing it greens, collard greens in particular, but any green can be complemented by chow-chow. Beans such as black-eyed peas and pinto beans are perfect partners for chow-chow.
